“Because you have so little faith.” This was the first thing Jesus said to his disciples after Jesus healed a boy possessed by a demon that caused him to have seizures. The father of the boy said the disciples could not help him. Later the disciples, no doubt timidly and somewhat ashamedly, asked Jesus in private why they were not able to free the boy of the demon possession.
“Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17)
One of the smallest seeds at the time was the mustard seed. It’s a little hard to imagine, but a mustard seed can be from 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter. What’s more amazing is from that little seed grows a plant that birds can actually build a nest in (mustard trees)! But that’s not the point Jesus was making.
You don’t have to have a bucket load of faith, a boat load of faith, a kettle full of faith, as long as the faith you have is real. Real, solid, buried-in-your-heart faith no bigger than a mustard seed gives great power.
It gives you the knowledge that Jesus is within you, and nothing can take Him away from you.
It reminds you of the Grace and Mercy of God.
It becomes the evidence of the Holy Spirit working in your life, and thereby, in the lives of others.
It is the product of your belief in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
And just as the plant, this seed of faith grows, becomes stronger, becomes bolder, becomes the anchor of God in your life on this earth, and with care and feeding through the Word and daily prayer, will never wither or fade.
For by Grace are you saved, through faith.
Go out and move some mountains!
