The robins are flitting around in their mating ritual; the two turtle doves have returned to the blue spruce in the front yard; the finches have returned to the next door neighbor’s feeders, and the blackbirds and the squirrels are raiding the back yard neighbor’s feeder (not that she minds). And the sparrows, those year-round residents, keep on keeping on. A lot of people think the sparrows are a pest – not a song bird, not even very pretty to watch. But what an example!
In Matthew 10 Jesus was preparing his disciples to be sent out into the world:
29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
And in Luke 12:
Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? 26Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Joel Hemphill wrote a great song in 1977 called “Consider The Lilies.”
Consider the lilies – they don’t toil or spin,
But there’s not a flower with more splendor than them.
Consider the sparrow, he doesn’t toil or sow,
But he’s fed by the Master who watches him grow.
We have a heavenly Father above
With eyes full of mercy and a heart full of love.
He really cares when your head is bowed low,
Consider the lilies and then you will know.
May I introduce you to this Friend of mine?
Who hangs out the stars and tells the sun when to shine.
And kisses the flowers each morning with dew.
But He’s not too busy to care about you!
It’s alright and very normal to be afraid. In times of fear God fully expects us to cry out to Him, and He wants us to know that He has not forgotten us, He has NOT forsaken us, HE will be with us through all things “even unto the end of the age.”
Know the Creator never loses control of His Creation. Call on His name. Believe in and accept Jesus Christ the Son of God, and all the promises we have from Him.
Consider the lilies. And then you will know.
