Let Him Carry the Suitcase

In her book The Hiding Place, Corrie ten Boom tells of a lesson her father taught her as a small child.  She had asked him a question which the answer to was not possible for a young child to understand.

Her father, a jeweler and watch maker, had his work suitcase with him containing all the tools and parts and newly purchased items necessary for his trade.  He asked Corrie to pick up the suitcase and carry it for him.

Try as she might, she admitted it was too heavy for her to carry.

Her father said, “Just as I your earthly father can carry that suitcase for you, so can your Heavenly Father carry all of the trials and troubles you may face, we just have to trust HIM to carry it for us.”

Later in her life, imprisoned in a concentration camp, this lesson so many years before gave Corrie the faith to trust God even in the squalid, flea-infested conditions in which they were imprisoned.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” –Matthew 11

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. –Philippians 4

Corrie ten Boom had peace amidst the chaos, the peace that only God can give.  Trust Him.
